Photography Exhibitions
August 10, 2017
Our Photography Program has been busy this summer putting together two different exhibitions of alumni and faculty work. Eight recent alumni show their work collectively in the Paul Peck Alumni Center Gallery representing a diverse body of work that ranges from portraiture to landscape, from commercial to fine art, in color as well as in black and white. This abridged version of the most recent Senior Thesis Exhibition includes numerous pieces from individual thesis explorations, an intensive nine-month process. Paul Runyon, Photography Program Director, notes that the wide range of work represents a core philosophy of the program, which is the premise that photographers today are doing both fine art and applied or commercial work simultaneously. “The market has changed and we were far ahead of the curve in promoting the merging of those two worlds. It really comes through with this work,” Runyon says.
Just around the corner, the newly opened Study Hotel is the temporary home to a collection of Professor Mike Froio's stunningly rich photography that reflects the lush landscapes and historical architecture of the former Pennsylvania railroad, an ongoing and intensive project, "From the Mainline" that Froio continues to pursue. Structured as an homage to the industrial achievements of the past 150 years, Froio documents the infrastructure and landscape that’s developed alongside Pennsylvania’s ecology. “Much of what they engineered and built over 100 years ago remains a vital part of the Mid-Atlantic’s railroad infrastructure today, a testament of their foresight and engineering abilities” says Froio. His gorgeous photography is often accompanied by meticulously researched text that recounts and pays tribute to the importance of railroads in our region and the nation.
The Study has generously agreed to display the work of our Photography program's faculty, students, and alumni rotating on 45-day periods throughout the year.
